About Us
PLN was started in 1999 by a group of parents who were inspired by an organization called Planned
Lifetime Advocacy Networks (www.plan.ca) based in Vancouver, BC. We were concerned about the social
isolation of our family members living with a disability and worried about what will happen to them
when we are gone. Representatives from PLAN guided these parents through starting and establishing
our affiliate Planned Lifetime Networks - Waterloo, Wellington, Oxford. PLN was incorporated in
September 2000 and was granted charitable status in January 2001.
Our Vision and Beliefs
At Planned Lifetime Networks, we strive to ensure that no one is left alone. Anyone in danger of
social isolation due to some form of disability is welcome in our organization. We envision a future
where people with disabilities enjoy financial security, in a place of their own, directing their own
lives and participating in a caring, vibrant community that recognizes their contribution. We believe
that everyone’s quality of life is directly related to the quality of their personal relationships.
Our Core Values
- PLN is an organization run by families and for families. Family leadership means that the majority of
our Board of Directors are people who have family members with a disability.
- PLN believes that relationships form the foundation of a good life and safe and secure future.
- PLN believes that everyone, regardless of ability, makes a valuable contribution to their community.
- PLN is self-sufficient and does not accept government funding for the operational expenses of our
organization. This makes us both efficient and directly accountable to the families we serve.
Families contribute by paying part of the cost of the network by membership and per hour Connector fees.
Our Board of Directors - June 2006 to June 2007
